NACTU (South Africa)
NACTU (the National Confederation of Trade Unions â known as CUSA-AZACTU until April 1987) was formed in 1986 by merging CUSA, a union grouping with a policy of black leadership, and AZACTU, a strongly black consciousness group of unions which admitted only black members. NACTU was formed in response to the emergence of the non-racial COSATU, which is far bigger and more influential. NACTU, in contrast, holds an âanti-racistâ position. CUSA was one of the main groups involved in the negotiations to form COSATU, but felt it could not compromise on the issue of black leadership. CUSA-AZACTU claimed to have 23 affiliates in 1986. NACTUâs leaders are Phirowshaw Camay and Pandelani Nefolovhodwe.

NAFCOC (South Africa)
The National African Federated Chambers of Commerce (NAFCOC) represents African business people in South Africa and works to mobilise African capital and to build an African middle and capitalist class. Founded as the National African Chambers of Commerce (NACOC) in 1964, it became NAFCOC in 1969 when it became a federation of regional groups based on the provinces and the bantustans.
Since 1969 NAFCOC has had an equivocal attitude to apartheid, using some provisions such as group areas to seek exclusive trading rights for African capitalists, and opposing other provisions which discriminate against them. Its essentially pragmatic approach has also been reflected in its close relationship with the state under P. W. Botha and with white capitalists, while attempting to mobilise African capital and use a nationalist ideology to attract support and build an African class of entrepreneurs.

Naicker, G.M. âMontyâ (South Africa)
Dr Naicker was President of the Natal Indian Congress for many years from 1945. He signed the Xuma-Dadoo-Naicker Pact in 1947 which set up a working alliance between the ANC and the South African Indian Congress.

Nakuru Agreement (Angola)
Reached after five days of talks in Nakuru, Kenya, among Holden Roberto, Agostinho Neto and Jonas Savimbi, and with Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta in the chair, the agreement was an attempt to save the Transitional Government in Angola. Faced by the danger of the transitional arrangements breaking down, the leaders of the three nationalist movements agreed to renounce the use of force against each other, and attempted to find an agreed basis for peaceful progress to independence. In the event, and despite the agreement, armed hostilities among the groups subsequently escalated into open warfare.

Namib Desert (Namibia)
The Namib Desert runs the length of the Namibian coast, covering about 20 per cent of its total land area, and is one of the driest deserts in the world. The word Namib derives from the Nama language and means âenclosureâ. The desert was so named because for centuries it formed a natural barrier against intrusion from the sea, and was one of the reasons for the relatively late colonisation of Namibia.
